"As of early 2026, there are no plans for a complete phase-out of gas in Queensland. Several key points highlight the current stance of the government and the energy outlook: 1. **Energy Roadmap 2025**: The Queensland government has committed to maintaining gas as a crucial component of the energy mix. The roadmap outlines that gas will continue to be used for peak and backup capacity to ensure grid reliability. There are plans to increase gas-fired power generation capacity from approximately 3.5 GW to between 6.1 and 8.3 GW by 2035. 2. **Government Statements**: Officials, including the Minister for Energy and former energy ministers, have repeatedly stated that gas will not be banned. The government emphasizes the role of gas in achieving its renewable energy targets, which aim for 70% by 2032. 3. **Supply Outlook**: The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) predicts that gas supply in Queensland will remain adequate into the first half of 2026. The region is expected to support other states facing gas shortages. 4. **Political Landscape**: While some smaller parties advocate for phasing out coal and limiting new gas projects, these calls do not translate into an immediate ban on existing gas sources. In summary, gas is expected to remain a significant part of Queensland's energy strategy for the foreseeable future, with no current plans for a total phase-out."
